This course is designed to support registered nurses (both adult and child) working in paediatric areas within the North East & North Cumbria region where critically ill children are cared for. This includes but is not limited to paediatric inpatient ward areas and paediatric emergency departments.
The course aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of nurses caring for level 1 critically unwell children and young people and gain level 1 competencies specified to care for children requiring basic critical care. These requirements are stated in PCCS staffing and education standards for units caring for level 1 critical care paediatric patients found in the Quality Standards for the Care of Critically ill or Injured Children (PCCS, 2021).
The course acknowledges prior experience and clinical skills whilst further developing knowledge and skills in the context of caring for critically unwell children. Skills acquisition should be facilitated in the learners own clinical area with the opportunity to observe and be exposed to specialist areas as able. To obtain Level 1 accreditation from PCCS, all aspects of the course must be completed in the timeframes outlined within this module.
